Memory Verse: Week of May 28th
Week of May 28th
Luke 5:31–32
[31] And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. [32] I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:31–32
ESV)
[Context: This statement from Jesus comes after he is rebuked by the religious leaders for having table fellowship with sinners and tax-collectors and broken, messed up people. In fact, Jesus has just called Matthew (also known as Levi) into a relationship with himself. Tax-collectors were traitors to their own people – using them to advance themselves and line their own pockets. What good news that our sin sickness does not repel Jesus. It is the very thing that qualifies us. He knows we were broken and that is why he has come – that we might repent and surrender into his healing and forgiving arms! When you have sinned and are feeling guilt and shame, that is the very time to go directly to Jesus – the great Physician. He will be delighted that you have looked to him in your time of need.]
